Emergency crews combed through splintered lumber and twisted metal Monday morning, searching for residents still unaccounted for. Hospitals in Des Moines and Dayton reported more than two dozen injuries, several described as critical.

Power and travel disruptions

Outages surged past 280,000 customers across Illinois, Indiana and Missouri, according to poweroutage.us, while interstate portions of I-80 and I-70 were closed by overturned tractor-trailers and downed transmission lines. Amtrak suspended its Chicago-to-St. Louis corridor after debris littered the tracks near Springfield.

Forecast threats persist

The Storm Prediction Center warned that the same upper-level low-pressure system will pivot eastward Tuesday, placing more than 45 million people from the Gulf Coast to the Mid-Atlantic under an enhanced risk for damaging winds, large hail and additional tornadoes.
