The Texas Rangers designated hitter said he hopes Major League Baseball will understand the context when it reviews the incident for possible discipline.

Game context

The exchange occurred in the sixth inning after Duran struck out for the second time against Astros starter Hunter Brown. Television cameras captured Duran turning toward the stands beyond the visitors’ dugout, raising his middle finger and yelling before heading into the tunnel. The clip circulated quickly on social media, prompting an internal review by the commissioner's office.

Duran’s explanation

Speaking in the clubhouse after the game, Duran said the heckling began with standard insults about his performance but escalated when the fan invoked his family. “When somebody brings your mom into it, that’s not baseball talk anymore,” Duran said. “I let emotions get the best of me. I own that, but there has to be a line.” He added that security personnel later spoke with the spectator, who remained in his seat for the remainder of the contest.

Club response

Manager Bruce Bochy said the organization will support Duran while awaiting MLB’s decision. “We don’t condone what Ezequiel did, but we also don’t condone fans attacking players on a personal level,” Bochy said. “We’ll let the league sort it out.” A club spokesperson declined further comment.

Precedent

MLB has fined or suspended players for similar gestures in the past. In 2022, Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson received a one-game ban after flipping off a home-plate umpire. Duran, 25, is batting .267 with three home runs this season and has emerged as Texas’s primary designated hitter after Corey Seager’s hamstring injury.

Next steps

The commissioner's office is expected to announce any discipline before Friday’s series opener against Seattle. Duran said he will accept whatever penalty is issued and has already apologized to teammates. “I’m here to play baseball, not to get into it with fans,” he said. “It won’t happen again.”
