Aina Launches $399 Smart Ring With Screen and Joystick

Hardware startup Aina released a smart ring Wednesday that packs a screen, a joystick and a microphone into a wearable priced at $399, according to TechCrunch. The company is marketing the device, simply called "AI ring," as a controller for both AI and non-AI applications running on a phone or Mac.
What does the ring actually do?
The ring's microphone lets wearers take notes, send prompts to AI agents, set reminders, and dictate text on a Mac using either Wispr Flow or Aina's own dictation engine, TechCrunch reported. A built-in speaker allows users to take phone calls directly through the ring. The screen displays phone notifications and shows which app or device the ring is currently controlling, while the joystick and gesture support handle navigation. Aina says the ring can also control music playback and smart-home devices such as Apple TV.
How is this different from earlier smart rings?
Aina previously built Mirage, a three-key controller that let users map physical buttons to on-screen actions on a Mac — muting a microphone or ending a Google Meet call, for example. The new ring extends that concept into a wearable format. TechCrunch noted that competitors including the Pebble Index 01, Sandbar Stream, Oasis and Natura already sell smart rings with similar functions, which the outlet said is "probably why Aina has added more controls and functionality to stand out."
"Phones and laptop screens were designed for an age of browsing where you think about opening apps. For interacting with proactive agents, we need a better interface, and that is what we had in mind while designing Aina," founder Apoorv Shankar told TechCrunch.
Why is Aina betting on agent-focused hardware now?
Shankar's company raised $5.5 million in July, according to TechCrunch, and is wagering that demand for dedicated hardware will grow as more people run multiple AI agents simultaneously. The outlet placed the ring alongside other agent-oriented devices, including OpenAI's experimental keyboard and Rabbit's push to position its own gadget as a controller, as companies compete to build interfaces specifically for programmers and AI users rather than general consumers.
What are the ring's limitations?
TechCrunch's reporter, who tested the device for several days, said notifications, meeting alerts and ride-hailing functions worked, but acknowledged that "it's easier to use Apple TV's remote itself" and that "a lot of the software and features are still being fleshed out." The review did not specify battery life, release availability beyond the announcement, or shipping timelines.

Aina has not disclosed sales figures or a broader rollout timeline beyond Wednesday's launch, per the original TechCrunch report.
