Volkswagen has retired the ID.4 and introduced its replacement, a midsize electric crossover called the ID. Tiguan, according to Ars Technica. The new model takes the name of VW's best-selling nameplate rather than continuing the numbered ID lineup the automaker launched in 2021.

Why is VW replacing the ID.4 instead of updating it?

The ID.4 debuted in 2021 as one of Volkswagen's first electric vehicles designed after the dieselgate emissions scandal, Ars Technica reports. Local production began a year later in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the model received a facelift a couple of years ago that added an improved rear drive unit. But Chattanooga shifted production away from the ID.4 earlier this year, and with nearly a million ID.4 and closely related ID.5 units sold worldwide, Volkswagen decided it was time for a successor rather than another refresh, per the outlet.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, framed the new model as a merger of two track records. "The Tiguan is our best-selling model worldwide, and the ID.4 and ID.5 are among our most successful electric cars. The ID. Tiguan brings these two success stories together," Schäfer said, as quoted by Ars Technica.

What battery and range options does the ID. Tiguan offer?

The ID. Tiguan rides on an updated version of Volkswagen's mass-market EV architecture, now called MEB+, according to Ars Technica. Buyers can choose between a 58 kWh battery pack and a 77 kWh pack. The smaller pack pairs only with a 187-horsepower (140 kW) rear electric motor. The larger 77 kWh pack is available with either a 281-horsepower (210 kW) rear-wheel-drive setup or a 295-horsepower (220 kW) all-wheel-drive configuration, the outlet reports.

Volkswagen says range tops out at 373 miles (600 km) on the European WLTP test cycle, Ars Technica reports. WLTP figures typically run higher than EPA estimates, so a U.S.-cycle range number was not part of the information Volkswagen supplied.

What's different about the interior and controls?

The ID. Tiguan debuts a design language Volkswagen calls Pure Positive, and the automaker says it wants the vehicle to feel like it belongs in the premium segment rather than the mainstream one, both inside and out, according to Ars Technica.

The more notable shift is a retreat from the touch-heavy controls that drew criticism on earlier ID models. Ars Technica's Jonathan M. Gitlin writes that Volkswagen "has been listening to feedback," pointing to a return to conventional door handles, real buttons on the steering wheel, and physical switches for climate control and windows. The outlet notes the door-handle change may have been driven in part by Chinese vehicle regulators rather than customer complaints alone.

The digital instrument cluster also carries a feature meant to appeal to longtime VW owners: it can mimic the look of instrument displays from older Volkswagens, according to Ars Technica's reporting on the new cockpit.

Why did Volkswagen drop the ID.4 numerical name for Tiguan?

Swapping a numbered ID designation for the Tiguan name is a branding decision as much as a product one. By attaching its top-selling nameplate to the electric crossover, Volkswagen is signaling that the EV is meant to be read as a direct descendant of its most popular gas-powered model rather than a separate electric sub-brand, based on Schäfer's comments to Ars Technica. The move follows VW's broader pattern of using a single flexible vehicle architecture across body styles, a strategy the automaker has applied to combustion and electric lineups alike, the outlet notes.

When and where will the ID. Tiguan be built?

Ars Technica's report does not specify a production timeline, price, or manufacturing location for the ID. Tiguan beyond noting that Chattanooga had already shifted its production focus away from the outgoing ID.4 earlier in 2026. Volkswagen has not released U.S.-market range, pricing, or on-sale date details in the material reviewed for this report.

The full specifications, along with additional interior photos VW supplied to Ars Technica, are available in the original report.
