Al-Mughayyir, West Bank — Israeli Map Team Redraws Palestinian Land Lines

A unit inside Israel's Civil Administration known as the Blue Line Team has redrawn boundaries on official maps in the occupied West Bank, a process a Palestinian land-rights group says has stripped families of farmland ahead of the October olive harvest, according to Al Jazeera.

What Is the Blue Line Team?

The team was established in 1999 and is made up of surveyors, cartographers and legal experts who use satellite mapping and geographic information systems to review and redraw the boundaries of land Israeli authorities classify as "state land," according to a mid-September report by the National Bureau for Defending Land and Resisting Settlements, a body affiliated with the Palestinian Liberation Organization, cited by Al Jazeera. Land placed inside those redrawn lines can later be allocated for settlement construction, which is illegal under international law.

How Much Land Has Been Reclassified?

The bureau's report says the team recently re-demarcated territory in the northern and central West Bank totaling almost 49 acres, shifting it from "state land" status to land designated for settlement activity, Al Jazeera reported. The reclassified parcels included land belonging to the Palestinian villages of Jalud and Qaryut, according to the bureau.
