Discord Rolls Out Age Verification Worldwide After Privacy Backlash

Discord began rolling out a global age-verification system today, automatically estimating users' ages and requiring proof of age from some accounts before they can access age-restricted content, according to Ars Technica. Discord said it will take a few days for the system to reach all accounts worldwide.

Discord's system will automatically sort users into one of three groups: an 18-plus adult group, a 13-17 teen group, or an "unconfirmed" group for accounts where there isn't enough data to determine age. Users placed in the teen or unconfirmed groups who want to access age-restricted servers, channels, or bot commands will need to verify their age through one of several new methods.

Why did Discord revise its original plan?

Discord had announced a different age-check plan in February that relied on ID uploads or facial scans, but the company scrapped it after user backlash over privacy, Ars Technica reported. Concerns intensified after a 2025 breach in which hackers stole government IDs belonging to 70,000 Discord users from a third-party service the company had used to verify ages in the UK and Australia.

Discord CTO and co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy addressed the reversal in a post detailing the revised system a day before the rollout began. "In February, the only methods we'd planned for to confirm your age were facial age estimation or an ID scan. Based on your feedback, we committed to giving you more options that meet our high privacy standards," he wrote, according to Ars Technica.

How many users will actually be asked to verify?

Discord estimates that more than 90 percent of users will not be asked to confirm their age at all, according to the company's statement cited by Ars Technica. The automatic estimation system is designed to sort the bulk of accounts without requiring any additional action.

What options do adults have to prove their age?

Users incorrectly placed in the teen or unconfirmed groups have four verification paths, per Vishnevskiy's account relayed by Ars Technica. One lets users enter credit card information, which vendor k-ID routes to Stripe to confirm the card belongs to an adult; Discord said neither k-ID nor Discord sees the card details. A second option lets users share their age range through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store without revealing an exact birthdate. A third, available only in the US and a limited number of other countries, uses a Google Wallet ID pass based on a passport, with ID details staying with Google. The fourth relies on k-ID's AgeKey service, described as a secure age proof stored as a passkey on a user's device or password manager.

What changes for users placed in the teen group?

Accounts sorted into the 13-17 bracket face several new restrictions. Message requests from non-friends are routed to a separate inbox for review, and teen users get alerts about friend requests from people with no mutual friends or shared small server. "Sensitive" images will be blurred or blocked, and age-restricted servers, channels, and bot commands become inaccessible. Full profile details for teen accounts are visible only to friends and to people in smaller servers the user belongs to.

What happens to user data during verification?

Discord structured each verification path to limit what the platform itself retains. Card details route through Stripe rather than Discord or k-ID. App-store age-range sharing withholds exact birthdates. The Google Wallet option keeps ID details with Google rather than transferring them to Discord. The rollout marks Discord's second attempt at global age verification in 2026 after the February plan was pulled following user criticism and the fallout from the prior year's breach.
