What We Know About NYC's Record DoorDash Wage Settlement

New York City has finalized a settlement of more than $131 million with DoorDash over claims the company underpaid delivery drivers, the largest settlement of its kind reached by any U.S. city, according to the office of Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a consent order reviewed by Al Jazeera.

The city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) announced the deal on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. Here is what drivers and DoorDash customers in New York City need to know.

What did DoorDash agree to pay?

DoorDash agreed to pay more than $131 million total. Of that, $115 million goes directly to affected drivers and $16 million covers civil penalties and other costs, according to the DCWP consent order cited by Al Jazeera. The San Francisco-based company confirmed that roughly $6.6 million in payments never reached drivers at all, and that it made more than $5.7 million in late payments during the period covered by the investigation.

Who is covered by the settlement?

About 260,000 delivery workers in New York City are expected to be affected, based on figures from the mayor's office. The consent order covers underpayments that occurred between December 2023 and June 2026. The city said some underpayments were expected to continue through November 2026 before DoorDash's corrective measures take full effect, according to the order obtained by Al Jazeera.

DoorDash told Al Jazeera it will notify affected workers in the coming weeks. The city said it has already identified those workers using DoorDash's own payment records, matching the company's account of the shortfall.

What wrongdoing did the city find?

The nearly 70-page consent order found DoorDash failed to pay some drivers the minimum amount required under New York City law during the December 2023 to June 2026 window, according to the document provided to Al Jazeera by DCWP.

The underlying pay floor traces back to a rule created under Mamdani's predecessor, Mayor Eric Adams. In 2023, the Adams administration set the first minimum-pay standard in the country for app-based delivery workers, applying to DoorDash along with Grubhub and Uber. The rule started at $17.96 an hour and was scheduled to rise to $19.96 an hour once fully phased in by 2025, per the city's rule as described by Al Jazeera.

Samuel Levine of DCWP told Al Jazeera the settlement followed an expansion of the agency's enforcement staff after Mamdani took office in January 2026.

How much money will each driver get?

The city said underpaid workers will receive 200% of what they were originally owed. A news release cited by Al Jazeera gave two examples: a worker owed $1,000 who received nothing will get $3,000, while a worker paid $1,000 late will get $2,000.

That doubling-plus-original-pay formula applies across the roughly 260,000 workers covered by the deal, though individual payouts will vary based on how much each driver was shorted and for how long, according to the order.

What has the mayor and DoorDash said?

At Tuesday's news conference, Mamdani said, "When a worker earns a wage, they deserve to be paid that wage — not tomorrow, not after a lawsuit, but on time and in full," according to Al Jazeera's account of the announcement.

A DoorDash spokesperson confirmed to Al Jazeera the company's own tally of missed and late payments — $6.6 million never delivered, $5.7 million paid late — and said the company will reach out to affected drivers directly. DoorDash did not dispute the city's enforcement findings in the statement Al Jazeera reported.

What happens next for drivers?

DoorDash is expected to notify eligible workers in the coming weeks, per the company's statement to Al Jazeera. The city said corrective measures tied to the settlement are due to take effect by November 2026, ending the underpayments the consent order identified.

Drivers who believe they were shorted and do not hear from DoorDash or the city in that window may want to contact DCWP directly, since the agency has already cross-referenced DoorDash's payment records to build its list of affected workers, according to the settlement announcement.

The deal does not resolve whether other delivery platforms covered by the city's 2023 minimum-pay rule, including Grubhub and Uber, face similar exposure. Al Jazeera's report on the settlement did not indicate any parallel action against those companies as of September 22, 2026.
